Course outline:

This course is designed to inspire you and develop your enthusiasm for biology. You will learn the key concepts of biology that will enable you to understand the workings of plants, animals and the human body. You will gain insight into current issues in biology including stem cells, immunisation, heart disease, genetic manipulation and conservation. The course will also develop your understanding of how science works and enable you to evaluate claims made about science in the media.

Course structure:

Year 1

Unit 1 – Biological Molecules
Unit 2 – Cells
Unit 3 – How organisms exchange substances with their environment
Unit 4 – Generic information, variation and relationships between organisms

Year 2
Unit 5 – Energy transfers in and between organisms
Unit 6 – How organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environment
Unit 7 – Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems
Unit 8 – The control of gene expression

• Twelve Required practicals
• Mathematical skills for Biology embedded throughout.
