What are the entry requirements?
This course is designed as an introduction to teaching. You do not need to be a teacher or have classroom contact. However, this course is also useful for experienced teachers who do not hold a qualification. You should have a Level 2 English qualification. If you wish to progress into teaching in the further education and skills sector you will need to have evidence of level 3 vocational skills or a qualification at level 3 or above in the subject you wish to teach.
Who should take this qualification?
This Introductory Award is a pre-service/new entrant course for anyone wanting to enter teaching or training in the further education and skills sector. This includes those working in community-based learning and development programmes, employment and work-based learning, as well as those teaching and training in the sector. It would also suit graduates and anyone with appropriate vocational experience who is interested in entering the teaching profession.
What does this course cover?
The Level 3 Award covers the knowledge and skills required by teachers/trainers in the further education and skills sector. It consists of 3 units taught in college over 38 hours with 10 hours of self-study. Assignment work will be set which will be marked by your tutor, and you will carry out a short micro teach as part of this. There are no examinations. The units cover:
Roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
Inclusive teaching and learning approaches
Understanding assessment in education and training
What opportunities for progression are there?
The qualification allows candidates the opportunity to progress into employment as teachers/trainers, as well as to the following qualifications:
Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training
Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training
Please note, these Level 4/Level 5 courses require you to have access to 30 hrs of practical teaching or to already be in a teaching/training role.

This course may attract reduced fees or full fee remission if you are unemployed and in receipt of a qualifying means tested benefit.
