The Business and Technical Studies curriculum area includes all Business-related subjects including AS/A- level Business & Economics, BTEC Business, Administration & Office Skills and BTEC Travel & Tourism. We will also be offering a new AS course titled Enterprise, Employability and Personal Finance in Sept. 2014.
This curriculum area also includes the technical / vocational subjects of IT, Computing, Engineering, Marine Engineering, Carpentry and Hairdressing. There is a mix of academic and vocational subjects to meet the needs of students through levels 1-3. The Curriculum team hold regular meeting to monitor course and student progress.
IT has three specific pathways: Games & Interactive Systems, Computing & Programming and Advanced Users at level 3 plus Games and Animation at level 2. The IT team also deliver ITQ User Essentials cross-college to students on level 3 programmes to update their skills for progression to university and employment.
There are 11 full- and part-time teaching staff across the Curriculum Area. Where available, staff participate in curriculum network meetings pre-16 and post-16 to share good practice and maintain contact with local providers. On the Annual BATS Challenge Day local schools are invited in to participate in a cross-course competition. There are a range of trips and events organised every year and good links with Universities.
There is a commitment to up-dating resources across the area with recent upgrades including new equipment in Engineering, a bespoke Marine Skills Centre, a refurbished Carpentry workshop, a new state-of-the-art Hairdressing salon and a rolling programme to continually improve the IT suites. There is well-developed Moodle software on the VLE which includs on-line tracking and useful resources for students and staff.
