Course Description

This course offers the recognised teaching qualification that will enable you to pursue a career as a teacher in the further education and training sector, which is predominantly students aged 16 and above.

Accredited by the University of Portsmouth the CertEd is offered as a part‑time programme at St Vincent College and is designed for teachers who currently work in the further education and training sector. The course encourages you to develop subject-specific knowledge by working closely with your course teachers and work-based subject mentors.


Why study at St Vincent College?

St Vincent College Adult & Higher Education Department has extensive experience of delivering distance learning CertEd courses.

Tutors have strong academic and teaching qualifications as well as current research skills. Tutorial support is a strong feature of all courses offered by the department. There is a good range of resources available to support your studies and access to a range of other relevant qualifications offered by the college, including Maths and English GCSE at no extra cost, which you can take alongside the CertEd course.

What will I experience?

On this course, you will develop your skills as a teacher through practical activity and the study of theories and contemporary issues within further education.

You will join fellow professionals from a range of subject backgrounds for weekly seminars, creating an effective peer network where a variety of teaching practice can be shared.

You are expected to have secured your own teaching placement where you will teach at least 50 hours per year and have an identified subject mentor.

How much it will cost?

Currently the course fees are £2,300 per annum (Student loan available).

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching aims to demonstrate good practice and employs a range of styles, which include seminars, workshops, lectures and active group participation. Your time in class will develop your skills and knowledge to inform your own teaching practice and help to develop your own teaching style.

Each teaching block you will complete two units of study, with each unit comprising between 2 – 3 assignments. As a part-time student you will take one teaching block (two units of study) each year.
Each unit has varying approaches to assessment. Examples include research based essays, teaching practice files, lesson observations and logging personal development, which will be supported by reflective accounts.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must possess and be able to evidence each of the following:
A minimum of level 3 qualification within their subject delivery area coupled with sufficient experience to establish professional competence;
GCSE Mathematics and English language at grade C or above, or equivalent;
Confirmation of 50 hours teaching per year of the course;
All offers are subject to Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance and Occupational Health clearance. (This will need to be confirmed by your employer).
