The Visual and Creative Arts is a vibrant and energetic Curriculum Area with 10 committed staff. In Creative Arts, AS/A levels are offered in OCR Art and Design, Fine Art, Graphics, Photography and Textiles, and are complemented by a level 3 BTEC in Art and Design. A popular level 2 BTEC qualification is also offered in Art and Design. In Performing Arts, AS/A levels are offered in Music Technology, Music and Dance with the latter two subjects also available as level 3 BTEC qualifications. BTECs are also offered in Advanced Acting and Performing Arts. Some staff contribute to teaching in the Learning Support Unit for students with a range of learning needs.
In addition, staff offer a range of enrichment opportunities across the Curriculum Area, including art and performance workshops. Students are encouraged to display their art in exhibitions both locally and in-house. Performing Arts students put on a range of plays, shows and gigs throughout the academic year, culminating in the successful ‘St V Festival’ at the end of the summer term.
The Art department have two dedicated Mac suites and photography have the use of a purpose-built dark room and photographic studio. The Art block has recently been refurbished and incorporates a unique view over Portsmouth Harbour. The Performing Arts department have two large studios and the use of the College theatre. There is a continued commitment to improving IT resources, including the use of Moodle software on the VLE. All staff are encouraged to participate in regular training updates and attend local curriculum network groups, including the post-16 Wessex Group meetings for Art, Dance, Drama & Performance and Music.
