University fair catches students’ imaginations

Students at St Vincent Sixth Form College took the chance this week to find out more about their future opportunities. Around ten local university representatives came to talk about their courses and where they might lead at the Higher Education fair.

Joss O’Brien, Careers and Progression Assistant, works at the college as a careers adviser and oversees work experience. She felt getting universities on site helped students see many options before making their university applications.

“The higher education fair is an excellent opportunity for students to find out about different universities which helps them decide what they want to do for their future”, Joss said.

Events like today’s fair are designed to show off different careers and give students a little bit more confidence, chatting to people they have not met before.

Harrison Webber, a first year Sports and Coaching student, reflected positively on his experience, learning about Armed Forces careers on Remembrance Day.

“I learned there were multiple different forces, some of them would involve me going to different countries and getting multiple qualifications. I think going to a different country for a year would be interesting.” Harrison said.

Angela Berry, Chief Executive Officer of the Lighthouse Learning Trust (LLT), home to St Vincent Sixth Form College, is a big believer in showing students what their future could look like.

In Angela’s words, “delivering educational excellence to all our students so that they can thrive and achieve their career goals is our clear vision. We are on a journey to offering outstanding career focused education.”

There are many ways students can gain high quality, impartial help with their options, not least World of Work week in March. During it, students can explore work experience opportunities in an area of their interest. They can also undertake short shadowing options and hear from speakers at the college, all with a view to developing some basic and more advanced work skills, like communication.

Richard Taunton Sixth Form College in Southampton is the other current LLT member and their higher education event occurs on Wednesday 13 November 2024.
