Recently we had the privilege of welcoming artist group Seekers to the St Vincent art classroom.
Gosport Routes
Seekers, who are connected with Gosport Routes, delivered workshops to our students, opening up their minds to the possibilities of careers in creative fields. On the day, our students had the opportunity to flex their creative skills by working on logo concepts. Then they had the opportunity to work, as a group, on the Gosport Routes canvas. This was a free draw ‘doodle’ activity, where they were able to engage with their imagination and truly express themselves.
Wellbeing through art
Gosport Borough Council has recently seen a significant investment in arts-based initiatives. We couldn’t be happier with the news and the recognition that art and creativity is an essential part of maintaining wellbeing in our young people.
Seekers used a spin-the-wheel activity, which held different emotions on it, to engage the students. The exercise brought up many fond memories of the upbringing in the area, and allowed them to express themselves through their creations.
Activities such as these give students the opportunity to build confidence, communicate ideas and develop problem-solving skills, while also encouraging positive conversations around wellbeing and self-expression.
Community Collaboration
The students, cautious to start, really opened themselves up to the experience. And it brought us all a great sense of pride to see the artwork on display at Gosport Marine Festival.
Having their work displayed publicly gave the students a real sense of achievement and allowed them to see first-hand how their creativity could contribute to a wider community project.
Art Teacher Chloe said, ‘This is a wonderful example of community collaboration. It’s fantastic to see the creative arts being recognised as a worthwhile venture. Our young people did such an amazing job, engaging and creating, then seeing their work on display for the public to view. It was inspiring to say the least.’
Motiv8
Motiv8, the charity behind Gosport Routes, is a youth group with over 26 years of experience helping young people across our area. Gosport Routes is an ambitious three-year programme, designed to transform cultural access and participation across Gosport, starting with young people and radiating out into the local community.
The programme will shine a spotlight on Gosport’s unique cultural character, giving the local community the chance to celebrate Gosport’s rich cultural identity. We’re proud that St Vincent’s College is part of their journey.
