Criminology

This is an increasingly popular subject and the first criminology course to be offered at Level 3.

Students will study different types of crime and criminal behaviour as well as crime detection and the functions of the criminal justice sector, including forensic science.

This course is ideal for anyone interested in a career in the police force, the legal profession or forensic sciences.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Five GCSEs at grade 4 and above, preferably including English grade 5 or above.

WHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN:

This course examines some of the popular images of crime in the media and elsewhere and looks at crime statistics and theories about the causes of crime. It also has a historical element, studying criminological theory from 1930 to the present. It addresses why certain behaviour is criminal, what are the causes of crime and the consequences for the individual of being labelled as a criminal.

PROGRESSION ROUTES:

Higher education courses in criminology, political science, sociology, law or other subjects. Career progression into Police Force, CSI units, Forensic Science and the legal profession.
