Introduction to Local History – Part 1

Who is this course for?
This course traces Gosport’s development from a fishing village to a coastal town with its own distinctive identity.
It is not meant to be a chronological history, as students will be interested in
different aspects of the town’s character, history, independence, and vitality, so the course will focus on a range of relevant themes. Gosport has a great deal of history to explore, and so there will be a
second short course in which we will cover further topics of interest!
What will I achieve?
We will look at aspects of social and cultural changes through time and in this Part 1 course we will consider:
• Introduction to Gosport
• The Civil War
• Crossing the Harbour
• Gunpowder and the Palmerston Plot
• Royal Clarence Yard
No prior knowledge is necessary-just an interest in local history and the origins of the community in which you live!
How will my progress be recorded?
Your tutor will work with you to complete a Learner Progress Form, this form will record your progress throughout the duration of the course.
