Applied Science

Course Summary

If you enjoy hands-on learning and want to explore how science works in the real world, this two-year course is a great fit. It’s applied, which means you’ll take part in a large amount of practical work that’s both relevant and engaging.

You’ll study core content across chemistry, biology, physics and maths, and learn how to apply this knowledge in real-world contexts. You’ll also build a strong set of practical lab skills, alongside developing your exam techniques and time management.

You’ll explore progression routes in science, including university options and career pathways, and gain experience that’s valued by both higher education providers and employers.

This course is equivalent to one A Level.

  • Principles and applications of biology (external assessment) – Structure and function of cells and tissues Biological molecules.
  • Principles and applications of chemistry (external assessment). Structure of the Periodic Table and its implications on physical and chemical properties of substances, through analysis of different bonding methods.
  • Principles and applications of physics (external assessment). Waves and their applications Force principles and their application in transportation and construction of electrical circuits.
  • Practical scientific procedures and techniques (internal assessment) includes chromatography, colorimetry and electrical circuits.
  • Plus one optional unit: Scientific investigation skills (internal assessment) and Contemporary issues in science (internal assessment).

Assessment

Students will study 5 units, three of which are externally assessed. External assessment is worth 50% of the final grade.

At least five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including science, maths and English.
