Understanding Autism – Certificate

Course Summary

This certificate covers in-depth topics such as the characteristics of autism, including social communication differences, sensory sensitivities, and repetitive behaviours. Students will explore various theories and perspectives on autism, diagnostic criteria, and the impact of autism on individuals and their families. The course also addresses strategies for supporting individuals with autism across the lifespan, including education, employment, and social inclusion. Emphasis is placed on promoting independence, enhancing communication skills, and fostering positive relationships with individuals on the autism spectrum. Completion of this certificate equips learners with advanced competencies to work effectively with individuals with autism, advocate for their needs, and contribute to creating inclusive environments in education, healthcare, and community settings.

This is a 9 month course and will be delivered online. This course is free subject to meeting eligibility criteria such as being aged 19 years or older.

The objectives of this qualification are to gain knowledge and understanding of autism, including:

  • How to adopt a positive approach to supporting individuals with autism
  • The current legislative framework relating to individuals with autism and how different theories have developed over time
  • How to support and manage transitions for individuals with autism
  • The range of therapeutic interventions and support available for individuals with autism and co-occurring conditions
  • How to support communication and social interaction for individuals with autism
  • How to develop an understanding of how individuals with autism may be vulnerable and the support worker’s role and responsibilities relating to safeguarding according to legislative requirements.

Assessment

Students enrolled onto this course will be allocated an Assessor/Tutor. All units will be individually internally assessed using a range of assessment methods. Assessment will be Internally Quality Assured (IQA) and Externally Quality Assured (EQA) by the Awarding Organisation.

The different types/methods of assessment will be discussed between student and Assessor/Tutor.

You can progress onto another adult education course.

Entry Requirements

While there are no strict entry requirements for this qualification, students will need to complete initial and diagnostic assessments in English and maths to determine the level of the course.
