Learning Support

AT ST VINCENT SIXTH FORM COLLEGE, WE ARE COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS SO THAT THEY CAN ACHIEVE THEIR FULL POTENTIAL.

Welcome to the SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) Support Team

We support the identified needs of all students with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities). Information regarding student need is identified to us via the following pathways.

  1. EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) – If you have an EHCP the Local Authority will send us a consult following your Year 11 annual review and amendment of your EHCP, this is called your phase transfer. The Local Authority consult process is completed alongside your application. This ensures that we are able to meet all of your needs to enable you to be successful in your academic journey at St Vincent.
  2. Individual Education Plan – if you have had SEND support at your secondary school placement you may have had an Education Support Plan. We will look to obtain this plan from your school so we can continue to review and support you once you join us. This is called a graduated response.
  3. Self-declared learner need – when you complete an application you will be asked to declare if you feel you have learner needs that may impact on your ability to access your education, this could be a need such as dyslexia for example.

Any student identified who may benefit from accessing support will be provided with guidance and information about such services in a discreet and understanding manner. By identifying students’ individual needs and providing appropriate support we enable students to achieve their full potential.

Support for particular learning difficulties

We value the diversity of our students and work to ensure that each individual need of our student body is met. You tell us what you need and we will arrange support for you on an individual basis. We can arrange support for students with:

  • Dyslexia
  • Dyspraxia
  • Autism, Aspergers
  • ADHD and ADD
  • Physical difficulties
  • Medical conditions (St Vincent has an onsite college nurse and team alongside specialist facilities and resources to meet a variety of medical needs)
  • Other learning and support conditions not listed

Our provision is led by highly experienced and qualified staff who work to ensure all aspects of each student’s learning experience is supported. This may include:

  • Access throughout day to SEN Leaders (open door policy)
  • One-to-one study sessions
  • Working with a nominated key worker
  • Learning Support Assistants in class
  • Time out cards
  • Access to ZEN den (quiet space)
  • Note takers
  • Individual timetables
  • Access to an extensive range of learning resources and technologies relevant to your needs.

The SEND team also liaise with external agencies, including physiotherapists, educational psychologists, HAS (Hampshire Autistic Society) and specialist teachers, and others, who make regular visits to support our students where the need is identified.

Access Arrangements

Special exam arrangements can be made where appropriate for students who are entitled to these concessions. This can include extra time or a separate room in which to take your exam, a scribe and/or reader, and the use of laptops. If you have had such arrangements in school please email the Exam access arrangements officer Helen Currie hcurrie@stvincent.ac.uk or speak to your teacher to place a referral.
